槟城大钟楼天际线受挑战！

任何有观看过李安大导演编制的《色。戒》这一部电影肯定会注意到王力宏，陈冲等大明星漫步在叶祖意大厦和税关局大钟楼之间的旧街景片段。相信所有槟城的人会沾沾自喜看到这一景，原来乔治市是可以随身一变成那么古色古香。很可惜的是好景就快会永久消失了。2007年尾，前州政府静悄悄地批准一家吉隆坡产业发展商在税关局大钟楼隔壁兴建一座现代式酒店大厦，其高度竟然超越大钟楼， 一旦建成，这摩登高楼将完全一面遮盖了大钟楼，形成槟城的一个碍眼又不协调的大怪景。其实在古迹保留核心区批准这样的新潮建筑物早已经违反了联合国教科文组织例下的世界遗产地准绳，肯定会影响到乔治市申请加入世界遗产地的机会。

近年来，前州政府多番不允许在古迹区建超过四，五楼的新建筑。为何今次会网开一面让这家名叫《亚洲环球商业》的外地发展商特别通融待遇呢？

我们必须坚强地抗拒这严重破坏槟城古迹区风貌的发展计划。请尽力写信去给我们的新首长林冠英，不要将错就错而断送乔治市申遗的大好机会！

For any Penangites who have watched the movie ‘Lust, Cautious’ by Ang Lee,  the street scene shot in Church St Ghaut against the backdrop of Yeap Chor Ee Building and the Customs House Clock Tower is a moment of pride and a reminder again that the view of rows of historical buildings in George Town is a unique asset that must be preserved for the better future of Penang. Unfortunately, once again, we are seeing another insensitive and ugly high-rise new hotel building being approved by the government in late 2007 to have it next to the tallest Clock Tower in Penang. In fact the modern-designed hotel will be so tall that it will over-shadow the Clock Tower and render the tower totally invisible from the other side of the island once the hotel is completed in 2011. Such an approval to erect a new high rise in a designated heritage core zone has clearly violated the UNESCO’s guidelines on World  Heritage sites on preserving the ambience of a historical area and further jeopardising the chance of George Town getting into the World Heritage Site listing this year. 

Strange thing is, the previous government had stopped approving plans for many high-rise buildings in the heritage core zone in recent years but why a project by this KL-based “Asian Global Business Sdn Bhd” could discreetly bypass the policy.

We must stop this senseless assault to our historic city and don’t let it from destroying the uniqueness of old George Town.Please write to our new CM Lim Guan Eng and let’s not perpetuate and condone the mistakes made by the corrupted BN government.
